Peter;
I picked up a 93 FZR that belonged to a friend of mine and he crashed
the bike. I freshened it up and put in a 1040 piston kit, did a mild port on
the head mainly just cleaning up the stock castings and matching the seats
and ports. Stock carbs with a jet kit and started with a D&D exhaust because
it bolted on except for the exit out of the collector to the muffler which
had to be custom bent. I have gone both ways withthe airbox or individual
filters and the power is about the same as isthe torque. The motor did
notloose anything in power or torque in the bottom or midrange. It gained
everywhere. The torque curve on the dyno shows 45 lbs at 2500 rpm and the
line shoots almost verticle hitting 68 lbs before 4000 and continuing to
climb slowly to peak at 79 at about 8700 rpm.
Oil consumption is almost zero and that is while riding continously
between 80 into triple digits. Just normal touring at 70 to 90 it uses no
oil at all.
I kept the stock FZR ignition and just wired it into the stock gts
loom. Ev en kept the stock box plug in place in case I changed back to the
stock motor. ABS was retained. Used the stock GTS oil pan.
The project has not been without problems. I fought carb problems for
a long time until I found a shop that located the problem and during this
process put the stock FZR header and exup on. I have left it on for the
present but intend to put the D&D back on since locating the carburation
problem. I had a problem with valve recession and put in stainless steel
valves. I think this problem was caused by high performance valve springs
that put on too much seat pressure and acclerated wear. Next I will go with
stock FZR or GTS springs. The way the motor delivers power I never have to
rev the thing past 9 grand anyway.
If you have more questions or can help let me know.
