The pithy ruminations from Adam Altman on
<Re: valve seal replacement?> were:
=> Valve seal replacement = $350 (guess)

If it was that cheap, I'd do it now!

=> castrol 20/50 = $1.50

Mobil1 15/50 = ~$4.50

=>
=> You have to stop for gas avery 200 miles anyway.
=> Thrown in a cup of oil and save some jing.

Yeah, but if I'm doing 1.5K miles/week, adding oil all the time is a real pain
(hmmm...will the next gas station have good oil in the grade I need? where will
I keep an extra quart when the saddlebags are full for 2 people on a long tour,
etc.).

=>
=> I'm not convinced it's coming from the valve guide

Neither am I.

=> seals anyway (lay opinion--your mechanic has a better
=> idea than me, but I thought that if it was the vgs,
=> the oil would leak down into the cylinder at shut off,
=> resulting in a puff of smoke at start).

I don't think that the local shop did a really complete diagnosis, but it
sounds like a reasonable guess.
