Does the bag has to be drilled to have the rack attached? My worry is whether
it will stay watertight after the rack is attached (not a worry with the backrest
since only the side of the bag has to be drilled. What are the items typically carried
on the rack?

Yes. It does. I have E50 on VFR already (the bag has survived the totalled ZX
with some scuffs). Just want to warn you that aluminum topplate is likely
to crack in a crash. So I would recommend a plastic one for bikes with no
panniers (that is if the topbag is likely to touch the pavement in a spill
forget about the aluminum Z-255).
