I spent the afternoon dealing with an infuriating problem. As I hopped
on to my bike after work on Friday I noticed the windshield moving
around. I checked it carefully and was horrified to see that only one
screw was holding it on. I rode home very carefully, and didn't have
time to attend to it until today. I took out the last remaining screw
and looked at the holes in the fairing. What I discovered was that NONE
of the screws had vibrated out, every last one of them had broken off at
the threads inside the fairing! Some of the shanks could be gingerly
rotated out with a pair of needlenose pliers, but I had to partically
disassemble the fairing to get a few more out, and one of them I just
gave up on. I have replaced all the screws with metal ones, but now I
fear there may be unintended consequences from that. Have any of you
had this problem? Is there a better solution than mine? Could the
plastic screws have been overtightened before I got the bike? Would it
be better to go back to plastic and use loctite to hold them in place
without tightening them so much? Please advise.
