DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT USE LOCK TITE ON PLASTIC. It will attack it and the
screws will fail.
The plastic screws work just fine. Not only the GTS uses plastic windshield
screws but every Yamaha. Suzuki also uses plastic screws as well. Obviously
the problem is not the screws. Either they were over tightened or someone hit
the shield stressing it and breaking them off. With your description of
noticing it all of a sudden on the ride home leads me to believe it was
probably OK on the ride to work. Someone might have stressed the screws in
your absence. In any event, there is no need for metal screws. One good
reason they use plastic screws is so you do not crack the windshield from
over torqueing the screws. The plastic screw is like a mechanical fuse that
will break before the more expensive windshield does. The nature of the
plastic allows it to stretch at lower torques which is what keeps them tight.
