I went to fellow GTS rider Dave Biasotti's house yesterday and installed my
new HID light on the GTS. The result is a dramatic improvement over the halogen light
(I was running a 55/100W halogen bulb). For those not familiar with H.I.D. lamps,
they throw out a ton of light (plus they have the cool white/blue color). The H.I.D.
literature states, "H.I.D. lamps far outperforming conventional quartz halogen
lighting systems. A single H.I.D.. bulb produces an equivalent of 250 watts of
halogen lighting power [lumens] while only consuming 50 watts. Without the use of a
filament, H.I.D. lamps fire an electric charge at 18,000 volts between two electrodes
encased in a xenon gas-filled bulb. The results are revolutionary, consuming much less
energy, significantly reducing heat generation, yet providing outstanding brightness
and durability."
Plus, because the HID bulb has no filament to break, vibration is not a
detriment to its operating life (2000 hours). This is a big advantage for me b/c I've
been running higher wattage bulbs (100watts) but they never last for s**t (and always
go out at the beginning of a week long ride).
The H.I.D. kit (from Baja Designs) cost about $275. It took Dave and I about
20 mins to remove the front nose piece (Dave likes taking the side panels off too b/c
it's easier to remove the 2 bolts that are up under the nose of the bike). Then, it
took another 15 mins to locate the controller and igniter and to install the new bulb
(if you're interested, either Dave or I can tell you the best place to locate both
small boxes). Then we just re-installed the plastic. The entire project took us
(i.e., Dave . . . I mostly watch Dave work, and try not to get in his way) about 75
minutes. (Without me in the way, I'm sure Dave could have done the project start to
finish in under an hour.)
The H.I.D. light is awesome! Thanks again to Dave Biasotti!
