Hi Duane. You have my best wishes on a complete recovery. I know what a knee injury is like & it's not a pleasant thing. However , in your report you mention changing the ABS unit & flushing the unit every 6 months & that's all well, but you don't mention any service on your brake caliplers. It sounds like might have experienced a caliper problem rather that an ABS HU failure. Since the HU is designed not to interfere with normal braking action when it has even the slightest problem & it doesn't actually have anything to do with keeping or holding in the hydraulic pressure ( it releases pressure). Your GTS doesn't have much mileage but it does have age . Dirt still piles in places where we least expect it & mileage isn't necessarily the only indicator for parts like calipers for example. When was the last time you removed the front & rear caliper & did a major cleaning or overhaul in this area? Just because Yamaha changed your HU on warranty doesn't really mean the mechanic that did the job actually paid any or much attention to the caliper(s). More often than not with sticky calipers a visual inspection or passing a rag doesn't cure the problem. A complete dissasembly with a thorough cleaning does wonders. Also a sticky caliper doesn't necessarily stick or malfunction all the time. Anyways it just a couple of thoughts. I hope you get well & get to the route of this glitch before you sell your GTS because the next owner will still have this to deal with. You're right in letting him\her know of this & hopefully with it cured. Be good. Good recovery. THE SHORT VERSION: Your GTS front ABS can fail without warning and lock your front wheel and if it does so, the ABS warning light will not activate. Do not road test your front ABS. Use the static test only, but fully realize this may not be a true indicator of whether or not your front ABS will work when it is supposed to.
