Lee - welcome to the list! As a new '94 owner and member of this list, brace yourself
for a bunch of bs about the '93's being faster, but pay no attention . . .

A while back, a group of Bay Area GTSer's got together and rode up to Mt. Hamilton . .
. tight, narrow twisties up a steep mountain grade. Cool Kelly Cash and his '93 led
the way . . . he was flogging his little '93 at a fast clip, but my '94 could have
reeled that kid in at will. :) Jk. The embarrassing part was when Kelly and I got
to the summit, we were about to look back to assess the progress of the pack, but no
sooner had we stopped when Dave Biasotti pulled up on his '93 GTS Rally bike . . . and
he had some hottie on the back!

Anyway, regarding the long reach to the bars . . . the issue has been discussed by
many on the list. Some guys like Heli bars on their GTS's . . . others hate 'em. You
may want to look through the archives, but it seemed to be a pretty even split.

For what it's worth, I too am 5'-9" and I have Heli bars and a Corbin saddle . . . and
the combination works great for me. I have no problem riding all day long. Long
distance Madman John Laurensen HATES the Heli's on his GTS (just reading this e-mail
may cause him severe wrist pain). It's really a trial & error thing.

Have fun and enjoy your bike,

Subject: New owner w/ old issues

Greetings Everyone,
Having recently purchased a mint '94 GTS, and having dreamed of owning one
for years, I was a bit dissapointed with the ergos. At a perfectly average
5'9" tall, the reach over the tank is a bit long. After only 90 minutes on
the bike, hands were going numb and elbows were sore from being locked.
Obviously, the solution is either Heli bars or a steering plate adapter (to
allow standard handlebars to be used). I am fairly certain that Heli bars
will not work, as they don't offer enough additional rise. That leaves the
steering plate. Has anyone had any recent (<6 mo ago) experience with the
company that sells this plate? Being a competent home mechanic, would I
find installing the plate difficult? I would very much like to hear from
anyone who has used the steering plate, particularly which handlebar size
used and where they bought it, and if the stock hoses and fittings made the
switch. Ideally, I would like a bar that avoids interference with both the
tank and the stock windscreen. Any and all input is welcome. As soon as I
can solve this minor problem, I can begin to fully enjoy one of the
greatest motorcycles made.

Thank you to our host for maintaining an excellent service and resource.

And for the record:
