I typically get 38 mpg and I don't rev the engine up too often.  So when the fuel 
light comes on at 150 miles I zero out a trip meter (see how we tie these loose 
threads together) and know that I have a maximum of 50 miles to find a gas station.  
Really, I just know that over 200 miles is pushing my luck.

I did run an impromptu experiment where I rolled on the throttle very gently and did 
not use engine braking at all.  Half tank later I filled up and had achieved 75 mpg.  
BTW, I did this 2 up in the Smokey Mtns when cords were showing through - thus the 
need to be gentle on the rear tire.  OK, I decided to risk a trip with the wear bars 
in view.  Who hasn't?
