Well, I would try to use an oil with a very high flash point, so if it is
high internal temps causing the problem, then that would minmize it. I
would try Amsoil 20w-50 for an oil change. Also a larger oil filter.
Filters for Honda cars will fit the GTS, specifically for mid-90's Honda
Accord and Honda Civic. The Amsoil SDF-13 is a direct fit, and holds about
50% more oil than the standard Yamaha filter. The SDF-20 is even bigger,
and holds about 100% more than the standard filter. However, the SDF-20,
while it fits, gets sort of close to the head pipes. I personally use the
SDF-13. Henry Winkour and I both use the same Amsoil stuff in our GTS's,
and we do not have the consumption problem. I might use 2 oz every 1000
miles. Now, even though the filter holds more, much of that drains into
the pan when shut down, so you need to compensate with a few more ounces at
oil change time.

As for oil temps, has anybody though of putting one of those heat-sinks
gizmos on the filter ? That would be a lot cheaper than a remote cooler, but
I never really knew if those things work....

Good stories all. Always fascinating.

Oil comsumption. Hum. I wish we had access to the engineers approach on
this. I mean,
the original motor, I believe, didn't have consumption issues. When the
GTS motor was
'tweaked' for more 'real-world' power, they must have changed something.
What, and how,
of course, is the question. Mine only uses oil at high-speed/rpm. If I
keep it under, say 3500 to 4000 rpm, it seems fine. Over that is when
the comsumption begins, so it must be
rpm related. Or so it would seem. Perhaps it's 'flinging' oil around the
case and it's getting sucked up into the PCV valve. Or the valves are
floating and allowing the oil to
be sucked in the engine. However, I do notice, even it is using oil, I
find NO traces of
it in the exhaust pipe or any undue burning or heat in the cataylitic
converter. So appearently, it is at least, not causing any damage or bad
side effects, at least as far
as I can tell.

Anyone else? Different experiences with side effects? Smoking, oily film
on pipes, fouled
plugs? Neighbor kid putting garden hose in oil filler opening?
