No, the front and rear are independent of each other. Easiest thing to do to "exercise" both is perform the static ABS test by jumpering the test connector in the tail section of the bike, hold pressure on both brakes and turning on the ignition switch. This will make both the front and rear operate and it's quite easy to tell if either or both are not working properly. Try it and you'll see what I mean. Do this a few times in a row every couple of months and change your fluid at least once a year and you shouldn't have any problems. BTW you should also run this test as part of the fluid change to get old fluid cycled out of the ABS pump...Bob B.
