Briefly, many US GTS owners found that the ABS stopped working after a few years service. This was traced to problems with internal corrosion of the ABS pump, caused by moisture absorbed by the brake fluid. If you changed your fluid every year, you probably would not have the problem. I dont have exact numbers of the failure rate, but it was over 20% and might have been as high as 50% of total GTS's in service.
The GTS list was able to collect names and info on failures, and repairs already paid for by the owner, and one of the more pursuasive listers convinced Yamaha US to pay in full any ABS pump repairs. Keep in mind that the pump itself was over $1000. It is sort of like a secret warranty on the ABS system. I have heard that Canadian GTS'ers had a harder time getting the repair authorizied, but if they are persistant then Yamaha will pay for it. Before that happened, somebody was able to repair the pump, and documented the process. It is very labor intensive, but cheap to do. -----Original Message----- From: Doug Long [mailto:dw.long@;BLUEYONDER.CO.UK] Sent: Monday, November 04, 2002 7:23 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: US ABS Fiasco? In a couple of messages on the list I have seen reference to the 'US ABS fiasco'. What's that all about chaps? I don't recall the GTS getting bad press in the UK at all for the ABS, (just the cost of purchase). None of the UK based people or dealers I have spoken with has mentioned it as a problem either. Could you guys over the water expand on what the problem was/is. Also have any non US based riders had problems. I noticed in a UK dealer on the web had a Non ABS equipped GTS for sale, did Yamaha remove the ABS at some stage?
