That's a good point, and support for older devices and non-Play devices is certainly important for real-world apps. Briar runs on android-7 and above, and we have tickets for testing on Amazon Fire, Nokia X and Blackberry 10 devices when we can afford them. But this code isn't for Briar - it's just a proof-of-concept side project, so I'm content for it to run on a smaller set of devices.
