There are precedents: linux-modules.scm instead of libkmod, Guile-Netlink instead of iproute2, (gnu build accounts) instead of libc + Shadow, (guix cpio) instead of GNU cpio, the Shepherd, and probably more. The end goal is a system that is more easily navigable because attention is paid to consistency and tight integration; having a single language for key parts of it makes a big difference. Someone who starts contributing to Guix might eventually feel empowered to contribute to these pieces. It ties us all together. Now… > I have used LLM for some parts like (hwdb trie) and the inotify > implementation. And all "builtin" modules like 'path-id' are pure LLM > translations of the systemd C counterparts. It wasn’t hard to guess that using an LLM to produce a fair share of this project was going to be met with pushback in this community (as you know, with the exception of Guix whose decision-making process got derailed, all the key projects around Guix/Guile have now adopted a policy rejecting LLM-generated contributions; it’s also unclear whether Goodev is compatible with Codeberg’s terms of use). So, instead of tying us together, it’s creating friction. This is sad, because we could have rallied on a constructive project like this one. We’re now confronting fait accompli and having this distasteful discussion, with arguments like “oh but look systemd is not great either”, instead of enjoying the good hack. To me Goodev in its current form is a dead end, and I hate to say this, because I think it could have been great. But we don’t just write free software for the end result of getting “stuff that works” at any cost; we write it as part of our journey together. Ludo’.
