In most environments, I think it would be more comparable to walking into a
furniture (or other durable goods store) and buying something. If it is a
common item, you can just pick it up. For something a little more unique,
you have to custom order it.

Not that it can't be as you said, that is certainly the environment from the
Technomancer setting.

It really depends heavily on the setting assumptions.
