On second thoughts, the realistic way might be a mix of regular armor, open-frame armor and massive HPs - a rifle bullet would penetrate the thin regular armor unless the driver gets lucky and a beam catches it, medium rocks bounce from the open-frame armor and really big rocks warp the frame a bit.
