That is probably a good idea Onno.

>From stories I've heard about heavy construction and mining equipment it
would seem to match.

A few years ago machine operator (I believe in California) got disgruntled
with his employers and got into a large Wheel Loader and started tearing
the work sight apart. Damaging and destroying buildings, chasing and
crushing his boss, and generally being a very very dangerous threat to the
area. The local police showed up and tried to stop him with their side
arms, but the combination of range and cab prevented them from stopping
him. The story went that the police ended up using an unspecified "high
power rifle" ( I assume it was actually a .223 or .30-06) to kill the
operator.

I have also personally seen a few roll over tests on medium sized
construction/mining equipment and was surprised by the amount of
protection the roll over protection offered. I also watched some fairly
big rocks fall on and bounce off of cabs (not 25 ton ones but pretty big
none the less - maybe half a ton). I have also heard the old war stories
from test engineers who had large rocks or trees hit the cab. So I know
these things do happen today and people usually don't get more than banged
around in the cab.

So 5 or 6 DR should be enough to stop a 9mm pistol round outside its half
damage range most of the time. With significantly more open frame armor (
I don't know how many HP a 1/2 ton chunk of stone has, but could probably
guess its velocity after falling 20 or 30 feet - call it maybe 1hp/10 lbs
and 15 yards per second velocity so that would be 15d damage or around 50
points of damage) for the big rocks and roll overs. The rest would go to
hp for the vehicle but I would be very worried about the airtight seal. Is
there some way to just add armor to the cab or to reseal any breach? No
one wants a slow leak to a chlorine rich atmosphere.

Thanks,

Clint

On second thoughts, the realistic way might be a mix of regular armor,
open-frame armor and massive HPs - a rifle bullet would penetrate the
thin regular armor unless the driver gets lucky and a beam catches it,
medium rocks bounce from the open-frame armor and really big rocks
warp the frame a bit.
