Some thoughts on a possible stealthy re-entry

Atmospheric:
1) fire your rockets/retros etc to match the speed of the highest part
of the atmosphere where you might start getting 'hot' while over the
day side of the planet, outside the atmosphere and still hidden from
the naked eye by the 'blue sky' effect
(any thermal signature should be difficult to distinguish from some
minor atmospheric fluctuation, or perhaps a dark colored bird passing
overhead)

2) Target your re-entry over a thickly clouded area to maximize
thermal/atmospheric interference.

3) use glide-surfaces or active atmospheric controls to slow
descent(like a stealth airplane, just starting out a little higher)

Trace or less atmosphere:
approach in a controlled tumble and only fire retro rockets at the
last second to minimize opportunities for observation.
(should look like a big rock until you fire the rockets)

The man that holds fast to his bitterness will eventually be consumed
by it, but if you let it go, your arms will be free to seize the glory
that is life.
