So what happens when the drive turns off? It seems to me that the ship will still have the same velocity in normal space that it had when the drive was turned on.

That would mean that it would need reaction thrusters to match velocity with its destination. That would make traveling very far interstellar really difficult, because the further you go the more relative motion you'd have to compensate for, taking into account star motion, galactic rotation and universal expansion.
