My idea was to have the ships warpdrive connected to the bubble by
something analogous to magnetism or rubberbands. The bubble will center
itself around the ship but with a timelag. the ship drive builds the
bubble, but the bubble continues to exist a second or two longer then the
drive operates.

Further moving the bubble would work by moving away from the center of the
bubble. Like a segway basically, you lean/accelerate in the direction you
want to go, but you go that direction way faster then your
leaning/accelerating would suggest.
