I have some semi-sentient rocks, they float and produce gas, and people live

You also could make a bioship with accessspace, if you go for the
assumption that bioships need humans as "crocodile birds".
It might make sense to build some components of a bioship from metal. You
get a bioship with cyberware then.
SF stories occasionally have aliens, where the line between being
components of one being, and a groups of beings living in a complex
symbiosis gets blurred. Bioships built that way, would be at least
somewhat modular, and are safer from damage spilling from one component to
the next.
