I went with aliens visited earth in secret, but accidently left behind some
nanites, it was how they got their powers. Suddenly arth exploded with
supers and near supers..
Starred with people like sherlock Holmes, but then to more naferious and
such persons..
By the 1900s, it was war, slow and deliberate, sort of a cold war early? or
Got to work more on it, but in the end, the aliens came back in force and
was suprised to find that humanity had the way/means to resist..
