I do something like a stargate, but with a different macguffin.  My players
are based out of a reclusive spot in a world they can't really access to
explore (map stolen right out of GURPS Prisoner).  Their only way out is
The Lieutenant, who is a handheld sentient computer containing a
time/dimension travel device.  He plants them for missions of varying
length wherever I wanna play.

My hope is that someday they take control and put ME where they want to
play with varying degrees of warning so I have to GM on my feet.
