In the formula you have given you do on average (your hitpoints) * (speed)
* (constant factor) damage. So if identical vehicles hit each other at a
given speed on average they loose the same percentage of their hitpoints,
independent on how large and heavy they are and how many hitpoints they
have. (only rounding errors are larger with smaller vehicles)

That does not seem realistic and it is independent on how the hitpoints
are derived from other stats.

What is the DR of a matchbox car? I guesstimate DR 2 to 3 ...

HP should be a tiny fraction of a point.

Correct i had not thought about different HP to DR ratios.

Or a ram on a spur with shock absorbers and a predetermined break
point (Sollbruchstelle, it seems there is no English word) on the
spur. VXi26 for a TL8 model.

I had the same translation problem, when writing my mail. I had thought
about that too, but i was not sure, if something like this was not already
in place in real life ramming ships.

Two different types, really. TL2 galleys and TL5 steam ships. I don't
think the steamers were supposed to break their bows.

I suppose shipbuilders did think
about how to absorb the shock from ramming.

Mostly by building solid enough.

I suppose if TL5 shipbuilders had thought about predeterminated breaking points and if they did not have them, they have discarded them for a reason. This is only relevant for realistic vehicles though not for steampunk.

And if you have the rammer
directly behind the ram, if the ram breaks off, you still do a standard
ram.

Without the inflicted damage bonus and the taken damage
reduction. A bad deal.

You still only take excess damage that way, and propably a small perscentage of excess damage would be removed too, as energy going into the breaking of the ram.

Propably you could build a break off ram that is mounted on a solid ram. On top of my head the only potential problems i can see with that would be weight and hydrodynamics.

No idea how to model it in the rules, but for a cinematic vehicle at least, propably you could make a break off ram, that breaks off in 2 steps, the first break leaving it conntected with a fexible part, pushing the 2 ships apart. (Propably that is the shock absorber you have mentioned).
