Hello Tim, an airship, with or without supplementary lift fans, could be used to carry aircraft. But lifting gas takes so much space. The carrier would become big and flimsy, instead of big and massive. I had assumed a 20,000 ton/4,000,000 cf helicarrier with 2,000 tons payload. A 4,000 ton airship would be about 175,000,000 cf, 3.5 times longer/higher/wider. The outrigger idea means the fans go into pods while the power plant is in the hull. The total area will go up, which makes it harder to armor the vehicle, but then a carrier is defended by its aircraft and not by steel plates.
