Would it be possible to put a lifting gas container under the

Hello Tim,

an airship, with or without supplementary lift fans, could be
used to carry aircraft. But lifting gas takes so much space.
The carrier would become big and flimsy, instead of big and
massive.

I had assumed a 20,000 ton/4,000,000 cf helicarrier with 2,000
tons payload. A 4,000 ton airship would be about 175,000,000
cf, 3.5 times longer/higher/wider.

If you can come up with an otherwise fine carrier, with low endurence, you propably could modify it, to an airship, that can ditch it's gas bag and run home.

The mission of such a carrier could be to patrol an area, where an enemy attack it likely. When such an attack happens, the gas bag likely get's damaged anyway (large and difficult to armour) soon. The carrier can ditch it, still launch it's fighters, propably still take part a while in keeping the enemy occupied until the cavalry arrives and then return to base.
