The past would be in the record, but everybody recognizes that some bad gang kids might become good privates. The boot camp gives them structure to their life, no idle moments to get bad ideas. Either they make it in the army or they get drummed out and go to jail soon thereafter. And a honorable discharge after a lengthy term wipes the slate clean. The unemployed teenage gang member has become a mid-fifties former corporal turned shop keeper.
