Submit or die?
Aliens come to invade, but instead of invading, they threaten and offer a
choice.
Provide us soldiers and we will spare you!
So the Earth Empties its prisons and off they go into space.
The grunts likely being those best suited to that life, some are
intelligent, but some are ... why they are in jail is?? Murder or ..
While their officers, might be in for blue color crimes and like?
While the NCOs, never know, in every prisons there is leaders, those who
make things happen, so .... have those best suited to manage things, be the
NCOs..
Grunts do.
Officer direct
NCOs make it happen and train the troops.
Old story.
An Instructor/Major with a group of West Point cadets, at a local Fort. Told
the cadets to put the flag pole up that had fallen down.
After hours, the Major stopped them.
He picked a NCO at random who happened to be passing by, the NCO grabbed
some 10 or so soldiers at random and had the flag pole up in minutes. Yes?

If this is part of an army that is otherwise normal, the officers will
be misfits; the ones who last in this job will be talented misfits.
