Dear List,

the old Vehicles rules say that TL5 vehicle structures are wooden if they are either super-light/extra-light/light/medium with any materials or heavy with very cheap materials. What is the right structure for a wooden ship of the line?

In recent designs, I've tried to avoid big differences between structure and armor quality. Sure, you can have cheap armor over an advanced frame, but that just FEELS wrong. The wooden armor of a well-made ship should be at least standard, if not expensive (seasoned oak or teak). Does that mean the frame is medium/standard or medium/expensive, as suggested for "Age-of-Sail warships"? That would leave room for significant improvements as iron-framed/wood-hulled ships (heavy/standard?) and later steel hulls (extra-heavy/expensive?) were introduced.

Where would that leave the USS Constitution, nicknamed "old ironsides"? Was it just a question of armor? 21 inches of wood translate into roughly DR 90-100.

Or would a wooden frame of a ship of the line be heavy/very cheap, to set them apart from typical frigates or armed Indiamen, and also from earlier galleons?

Regards,
Onno
