Aliens might be strong in ships but not so well in ground forces?
Recently suffered a massive loss of ground forces, but they are still a
threat to current TL humans?
It gives humans a chance to go to the stars, hopefully some will survive the
enlistment.
Yes, the aliens might be so alien, and their enemy maybe human or human
looking and they need someone/thing to meet them force on force, or
infiltration or .. Less alien?

Would you be less threatened by a human police officer, or an mechanoid?

Maybe the aliens are like the ones from "Hunters of the Red Moon" and no
longer know how to deal with humans any more, they are above them or changed
so much they no longer can think like a human and anticipate a human enemy,
so they force humans from our planet to fight for them, against humans or
like beings from another planet?

Humans vs Elves or Dwarves or Halflings or just humans?

Yes, was the prisoners asked especially of just a general callf or all
humans, threat or no threat, never know they might be like any military
recruiter, join us and see the stars?

Mike

Alternate could be that earth has put a call in to the local job service in
space, as a way to curr out the human population, and prisoners are just
part of it.. I know Ireland for some 1000 years was a favorite place for
English, French and others to go to to hire mercenaries and maybe this is
human/earths time to be the merc clearing house or like?

Judge Dredd, how would it go if aliens stopped by Megacity one and said
"Give us your over flowing populous, serve us well and ..." never know what
might be exchanged? One way to learn how to fight in a universe and not have
to do it the hard way?

Quite true.. about rising star and all.
Or one who wants to command but can't do a normal at home, or get an
appointment to the military academy or like, but still thinks they can
command, so they take a commission to command the "Prison Regiment" and then
yes if they do well, and survive they may get a commission is more regular
forces.

Or to get out of a Slam, such as the ones in Riddick, especially when faced
with the Necormonger invasion/conversion, people get desperate and may
forgive/forget or let slide old issues to fight a greater enemy?

Been talking about ways to take a Sci-Fi movie/show and do it in a Traveller
universe or something like. Riddick being one of the challenges or ideas or
.. how far to push things and not go there? I know some of the first movie
is not to ... or is it? I know by the last movies with the Necromongers and
all, they limits of Traveller have been exceeded? yes!

Mike
Or how many corporals would have not become brutal dictators had they been
given a commission? I know of a couple. 4-20 is one, also one of the leaders
in the civil war in Sierre Leone c.1990.

--------
Ever read about Planet Pii, it was a world project, out growth of . I
forget, but the idea was the planets cover was one giant fugus organism.
http://wiki.firespeaker.org/Planet_Pii A conworld.

I want to think it was a sort of outgrowth of the Truerth project or ..

John replied to me:
If this is part of an army that is otherwise normal, the officers will
be misfits; the ones who last in this job will be talented misfits.

Or rising stars who want a combat tour on their record before they
go back to the fashionable regiments near the capital high society.

Provide us soldiers and we will spare you!

So the Earth Empties its prisons and off they go into space.

That raises questions. If the aliens need soldiers, how do they
threaten Earth? Are they similar enough to humans to provide
supply to a human force?

I could see a scenario where they can bomb any planet, but they
need troops for a counterinsurgency which they are unable or
unwilling to provide. But will humans make good COIN forces in
an alien population?

The grunts likely being those best suited to that life, some are
intelligent, but some are ... why they are in jail is?? Murder or ..

Criminals are mostly not rational thinkers, not capable of long
term plans, without the guts to stick to a frustrating problem.
The worst soldiers.
