You'd have to have something like a stand by mode which would behave the way 
the Booksense does now and let' you still check the time. There could then be a 
hard shutdown which would consume less power since it wouldn't have to monitor 
the time button. Of course, you wouldn't get the time announcement     feature 
in this mode.

That being said, you'd still lose some baterry power just keeping the clock 
running and of course rechargeable batteries are just going to lose their 
charge over time anyway.

This would be pretty low on my list of priorities for the Booksense, but that's 
just me.
