Remember that even though the Book Sense has a battery for the clock, the
Windows CE operating system is still running. It must monitor the time
and,
if you have set an alarm, it handles that function, not the clock battery.
Also it is checking to see if the button to check the time has been
pressed.
If it has, it must turn on the Book Sense to announce the time and turn it
off again. There are many things going on in the Book Sense that do not
go
on in the stream because of the operating system and the clock.

If what Raul said is true, that the clock uses a separate battery, then I

not see how what Robert says can also be true, that the battery runs down
because of the clock.
