The clock may have a small battery that keeps it running, but that isn't the same as what is required to have the booksense actually speak the time. If you pull the main battery, the clock keeps on ticking, but that is all that is running. If you push the time button, the booksense won't speak or anything else. There are two different things going on here. Do any of you remember some of the clock radios we use to have. They required a 9v battery to keep the clock going if power went away or if you unplugged the radio. All this 9 volt battery did was keep the clock happy, nothing else was powered by it. I would guess the booksense is similar. Don't you think they designed battery drain to be a small as they could?
