For what my 2 cents is worth, it seems a bit premature to hit the panic
button so to speak. Yes 64-bit Windows access would be very nice to have.
Actually from what I've heard the 64-bit version of vista runs a whole lot
smoother than the 32-bit version if you have the computing power. That in
itself would seem worth the switch if there were no other factors. However
right now, the support for 64-bit is still not what it is in 32-bit even in
the main stream market. This is especially true of drivers for consumer
devices certain printers, scanners etc. although it has improved a lot in
the past year. 64-bit adoption with Windows is considerably slower than it
is with the Mac and Linux, and I think part of that is because of Microsoft
trying to remain backwards compatible. In any event, I have a hard time
imagining 32-bit windows going away completely while these issues are still
with us and I think I even heard that Windows 7 will have a 32-bit version
although who knows what they'll decide to do by the time it actually comes
out. So while 64-bit is definitely the way of the future, I don't think it
has fully gotten here yet not even for the sighted market. The access we
have now is not antiquated by any means and I think we just need to sit
tight. Even if GW Micro was working on 64-bit access right now I'm sure we
wouldn't hear much about it in advance. Just my thoughts.

Subject: Re: 64 bit OS

Hi, I've been lamenting this for 3 years or more now, and spent tens of
hours trying to get it to work, but it just will have none. Soon it will be
impossible to buy a 32 bit OS. Not tomorrow, but maybe as early as this
time next year. None of the competition is making strides toward 64 bit
either as far as I know. Even NVDA is compiled for 32 bit, though it should
fly very nicely on a 64 bit os.

We might be switching platforms to get current spec very soon. I know I
love my 64 bit intel macbook, and I'm going to download another ubuntoo
image if there is an update to see if they fixed the bug in the installer of
the last one I got. I'm already advocating switch from windows, although
it's not for every one. We'll be forced into it though if we don't get 64
bit access soon.

Best,

Has anyone else noticed that if you are looking for a new computer from the
big box stores that it is becoming difficult to find a laptop or desktop
that is not running a 64 bit operating system. I have always been a Dell
person but in todays world don't see the benefit of building one from Dell
since there support is no better than that from HP which is mostly sold at
the big box stores at about 1/2 the price of the dell. Even the ready made
Dells at places like Best Buy are 64 bit operating systems. I have tried to
encourage Doug to get WE to run on a 64 bit system but it would seem that
this is not a priority item on the to do list.
