Hi, you're missing quite a number of things actually.

First, 64 bit systems perform vastly better running os that takes advantage of all the features of 64 bit archetecture than vs those that don't.

Second, if you are buying a prefab machine, they are getting rid of options on windows XP. Some of them are even dropping options on 32 bit OS. But then as discussed above, why would you want a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit machine all other things being equal any way? Even if it were 64 bit windows XP that would still blow the doors off 32 bit windows vista. I've tried this for myself and compaired, and I can tell you you are not getting very good bang for your buck.

Driver support for 64 bit is to the point now, especially on prefab systems where it's more than functional. That means we should be able to start designing a 64 bit video hook that will work reliably.

Finally, It's not available anywhere for any mney right now. Forget jaws, forget zoomtext. Even NVDA doesn't offer a package compiled for 64 bit. If you want that you have to download the source code and compile it yourself. Mac and linux are already deep into 64 bit, and so the access on these platforms has huge performance strides over windows. The first developer to finally get'er done is going to be highly in demand, and I want that to be my screen reader of choice thank you very much.

In short, there is nothing to be gained and everything to be lost not running and or developing on 64 bit os, and I was really hoping we7 would be up to speed. It won't. It will have a lot of nice features, most of which will perform at only half their potencial because we're running on crippled systems.

Best,

Well articles I read in the technology guides in our local newspapers for example consistently say that people should (if they can) get their local technitions to build their computer systems for them but that of course isn't always practical, the ragument for this being that the customer can choose the components or operating system he/she desires.

Now I'm not absolutely familiar with PC Notebooks these days but the one's I see reviewed have options to "upgrade" to Windows XP over Vista.

So what if you've got a machine which is capable of running a 64-bit operating system, you can still load a 32-bit operating system onto it as far as I know.

Am I missing something here?

Has anyone else noticed that if you are looking for a new computer from the big box stores that it is becoming difficult to find a laptop or desktop that is not running a 64 bit operating system. I have always been a Dell person but in todays world don't see the benefit of building one from Dell since there support is no better than that from HP which is mostly sold at the big box stores at about 1/2 the price of the dell. Even the ready made Dells at places like Best Buy are 64 bit operating systems. I have tried to encourage Doug to get WE to run on a 64 bit system but it would seem that this is not a priority item on the to do list.
