I'm sure you're right Michael; it's not every IE 8 installation that's problematic.
I'm working hard to disable software, change settings back to their defaults, etc., in an effort to find what it might be. It's not even consistent for me; sometimes a page will be fine, WE will turn browsemode on after it's loaded, and I don't get any error messages about IE crashing. then other times the same page will have all the problems I've mentioned, so I am not sure it's even a particular setting or piece of software, but some timing issue.
