Chip, Brenda, and all interested in this thread?

I'd like to express my thoughts about this.

I've been teching for a number of years, installing windows on pc's by myself, replacing parts in machines, and resurrecting old machines, there are certain things I don't do like seating processors but software and basic hardware configs, no problem.

And this experience tells me that your chipset and hardware can make a big difference in the kind of performance you get.

A dell doesn't have to be a slow performer, but often computers like dells and gateways, and off the shelf machines come loaded with proprietary software, and different sorts of drivers, for instance, gateway even had their own drivers for the soundblaster cards to solve some issues.

Video issues are a whole other pandora's box to watch out for, window-eyes is generally more forgiving of video issues, but believe me, they can still jump up and bite you in the hind end, so on paper, all pc's are supposed to be compatible, but in the real world, they are not.

That's why we have so many problems, because different hardware, firmware, chipsets, drivers, and combinations in therre of can cause all kinds of problems, and that is why I like generic shop built systems, and tend to stay away from the cookie cutter vendors like hp dell, gateway, etc.

They tend to do proprietary special stuff, maybe not so much with things like hard-drives and memory, but with power-supplies, and motherboard fittings, and then with software, and drivers, and well, it's the money game, they make it that if something breaks, you got to buy a part from them, you can't just get a power supply from antec, or who-ever.

Or a new motherboard from who-ever.

YOu should see the gimicky crazy stuff they do inside the cases of these dells and such, even the way they mount the hard-drives, and where things are located on the motherboard as compared to a standard motherboard, and don't even get me started on hidden partitions and bios and all that silly stuff that departs from normal.

Ok, nuff said.

Just thought I'd let you know from the ranks that yes, using a dell or any computer that has something non-standard on it can bugger up the works.

Brenda,

I've been using a Dell laptop for several years, and think it's utterly ridiculous for someone to suggest a certain brand of pc is the cause. who said that to you?

Of course tech support is going to get more calls involving one of the best selling brands in the country, that's the way statistics work.

btw, I have disabled all the added on Dell software, and it has made no difference. this is easily done using the MSConfig utility if you think anything from Dell is to blame, without a reinstall to see if that's the case.

I hit reply all, hope it works proberly.

I have the same locking up problems, especially involving IE. Sometimes W-E freezes and sometimes IE does. It even happened on my xp machine once. More often, with my Vista-64 laptop W-E locks up if I am going too fast when using IE. Last night, I had to shutdown the machine. It was fine after that. (I use dectalk.

One thing I don't see mentioned, is anyone using a Dell machine. I was told that Dell machines cause delays and Tech Support may even suggest re-installing windows without Dell programs. I would hate to have to do this. Seems like perhaps this is not just a Dell issue.

I'm not glad these issues are happening, but it is good to know it is not just me or my PCs.

I see the same things. I thought it was just that they really didn't do a good job testing with vista 64, but window-eyes 7.1 really should not have been released so quickly.

It's definitely not as stable as 7.01.

Moving too fast arund, and then loosing speec. Yes, I can confirm that. Under XP Pro. Thought it might be something with my pc, but seems like your machine must have the same trouble, then.

Hi.

Is anyone else having trouble with 7.1 when you start moving fast around the computer? I have WE 7.1 stop talking on both my XP and Vista machines, both using eloquence, if I start keying around too fast with either Windows keys or WE hotkeys. The rest of the sounds on the PC work fine, and it's not locking up, but it takes speech about ten seconds to start again. Other times it doesn't start again, and the only way to get WE back is to do a hard reset.

On my Vista machine, I also have a problem I have had ever since I started using Vista, only now it happens more frequently. Speech will die, the other sounds are working fine, and the only way to get WE back is to turn the machine off or do a start menu restart. Then, just before Windows shuts down, the speech comes back fine, for about two seconds, then the machine is restarted. This is very frustrating. Anyone else having this situation?

Thanks. Bill

Bill
