Hi Steve, yes, there are lists for moderators of lists, which you can subscribe to, in order to voice your issues and be made aware of upcoming changes.
in my case, the list providers also keep their list software up to date as far as changes in the accepted standard for format of email messages. I now am unable to use any of the GW mailing lists from my corporate email server, because it has adopted a change in the standard, which GW has not updated to, and so the systems are now incompatible. this kind of thing will continue to plague GW as the industry strives to handle the spam problem; and yet, if they do like every other provider of specialized equipment and software for the blind and move to a commercial/free list provider, they can offload these maintenance issues. finally, it provides the users of the list with an interface they are likely very used to. it's likely they will know how to unsubscribe or set vacation or digest mode. the GW list software is unique in my experience; it's not got an interface for the user like anything else I'm used to using. so, while I think your point is worth consideration, I think there are many other points which together, lead towards use of a free, standard, service provided by someone else. If one just manages one list, one can move to a different list provider. If a company manages several lists and they have a commitment to users and have it pre-printed in literature they distribute, they are left in a real bind if a list provider suddenly institutes Captcha's or rolls out an inaccessible web site or even one that doesn't work with their product very well. Also, while it can be resolved, I've also seen Freelist addresses flagged as spam although I've seen it less often with Google Groups. I guess my question is whether as moderators, do you get notice of changes that might be coming to the software that your lists depend on? In the past, I've seen accessibility issues arise without any notice at all on other common list providers, and can understand why a company might want to control the server and software they use, but maybe moderators have more input with Freelists and GoogleGroups.
