Hello all!
My wife and I have been using laptops and now netbooks for a good five years
now! I am one of those persons who likes to use the laptop or Netbook
anywhere in the house! This is so nice! When I buy a new or refurbished
laptop, I want to be able to hit a hot key combination to disable the mouse
pad and turn it on again if a sighted person uses the keyboard.
I looked at an Acer Timeline 5810 notebook which is suppose to get 8 hours
of battery life and comes originally with Vista. It may be upgradable to
Windows Seven which is what I'd choose. I haven't ruled out getting another
xP machine though if I can find one in good condition at a reasonable price.
I'm having problems with some intel part in my Asus Laptop I've been using
for some time. I'm probably ready for a new one or one which has been
refurbished. For reading Email, going on streaming sites, as well as the
web, a laptop has served me well!
My Netbook may be a bit slow at times especially on a weak battery but it is
nice to have six hours or better of battery life! I wouldn't be too heart
broken if I get something which lasts 4 hours of battery life between
charges. My Asus gets two hours when it works, perhaps two hours and a
half! It is 4 or five years old! Can't easily disable mouse pad so had to
put up with it! I can disable mouse pad on this N120 though and it is nice!
I'm using it now! I will do what I did when purchasing this N120. I read
the reviews and read what people said about the keyboard. I would say the
N120 has a good keyboard for the most part except for the accent key next to
the spacebar on the left, then the alt key which changes to something else
thanks to the magic keyboard utility Samsung has in this notebook. Then it
is the function key which also acts as the applications key so have to think
left on this Netbook instead of right on the laptop (grin smile)! Aside
from all of that, I like this Netbook! If I still have the Asus failing,
may need to get another laptop to replace it! I'm fine with laptops and
Netbooks.

True. I guess I prefer manual updates of everything except Windows. I
didn't get to use the updator more than once as every time the hp laptop
booted, its software crashed so I had to disable it.
I've since returned that laptop as the power adaptor got too hot.

Just have to kick in here. My HP laptop has several HP software on it. I
find it is ok accessible. For instance, the update software is running in
a web page, when you start it manually. And even the backup and restore
is possible to operate with WE. Ican't, of course, speak for the whole
line of HP products, but at least the laptop I am using has been
wonderful. I had another HP laptop a few years ago, and was ok with that
one. That was one of the reasons, why I did go for this one a little more
than a year ago.
And to you Sarah, who claimed that the HP update is not needed, since we
have the Microsoft update. I disagree, and disagree again. Microsoft will
update Windows, and Windows related software, and a few drivers. But when
it comes to hardware specific drivers, like your Graphic driver, your
sound card driver, and even some software for your CD drive - Microsoft
does not touch these. Of course, you could do a manual search on the net,
for your drivers. But that is a rather tidious job. Believe me, I know
it, as my desktop (a non-branded model), does not have an update
software. Just try to go to the Realtec homepage, and search for a driver
update for your sound card, or network card. Even though you know your
model name, you will need your serial number, and a couple more numbers,
so as to get the right driver, for your particular card. Boy! is it
easier with the update from HP, that simply checks your system, locate
the new driver, and ltes you donwload and install it.

I'm in I.T., and I've been in I.T. for almost 30 years, and for some odd
reason, HP is known for constantly bad software.
we've always bought HP printers at work, and they're always really good
hardware, and the drivers and other utilities are always bad; just
always!

Keep in mind that a lot of this extra updating software loads at startup
and
isn't very accessible. The hp software kept crashing and I had to remove
it
from startup.
I'm not saying they're all bad, just that Microsoft update can often do
the
same work and it's really accessible.

HP has the same kind of updating service, in a few keystrokes you will
be notified if there is any updates to your hard ware, or software
drivers.
Another thing to take into consideration if you are going to travel
alot, is the waranty. Some brands only have a local warranty, while
others have regional or even worldwide services.

you're quite right Tiler.
When I ordered from Dell, and when I ordered a Thinkpad from IBM,
both times I had knowledgible people helping me. I'm much more
inclined to say buy from a big name such as they are, because the
support for fixed drivers, and related software, as well as sales, is
better.
ibm gave you a piece of software they wrote, which automatically
checked all your versions of drivers and software written by ibm for
anything out of date, and if it found anything, it downloaded it and
installed it. don't buy from some discount no-name brand, you won't
get this kind of support.

Hello,
I don't remember what the guys name was on here that posted about
laptops, but I'd like to warn you about some things.
I was looking at computers, oh I think it was a month ago, and they
didn't know squat.
"Sir, I use a screen reader, and I need 32 bit windows 7. Which one
of these is 32 bit?"
"Well, I don't know."
Well that's alot of help.
So, see I'm just warning you folks to make sure you get someone to
help you, who knows what the heck their talking about.
Tyler
