Uh, I wouldn't favour connecting your tape deck to a mic jack if you have any 
chance at all of using a line in.  The mic connection will probably put a lot 
of background noize into your audio and should only be considered as a last 
resort.

Now as far as starting a recording is concerned, there should be a keyboard 
command for that...  control f9 to start recording, and control f8 to stop.  No 
tool bars necessary.

I had to look up that command.  Here's where I found it.
