Microsoft might have to slightly raise the cost of the new OS, but it
wouldn't be very significant. For example, I've read Windows 7
retailing for about $120.00. If the cost was increased to $135.00 and
100000 copies were sold, the extra $1,500,000.00 could pay for the
screen reader contracts. The burden of keeping pace with the Windows OS
falls on the third party screen reader developers, which hasn't been a
problem with GW Micro for the past 2 Windows OS releases. I have no
idea of the operating costs involved in developing and maintaining a
major screen reader, so my above cost scenario may be very off, but I
think you get the idea. GW comes up with a figure that will allow them
to continue to produce a screen reader at the high level they are right
now. Microsoft agrees to pay that amount. The contracted amount is
divided out across every purchase of Windows. This way, GW can produce
a great screen reader and users can enjoy a new OS/PC without spending
the extra money. Thus, being on the equal as a sighted individual. The
only extra cost might be for upgrades to the screen reader. .

This will always be true unless Microsoft and Apple developed a built in
screen reader that will be as good as a third party screen reader. In
this case the cost of development is spread out to a much large number
of sales.

Hi Pat:
I don't think that this is about people wanting a free lunch, it is
the fact that if a sighted person and a blind person wanted to buy
exactly the same pc, the blind person would have to pay more to be
able to make use of it because he/she would have to buy a screen
reader. That's what upsets some people.
