Actually this is a Windows 7 bug. While at Microsoft last week doing
our Window-Eyes training to Microsoft testers I talked face to face with
the Windows accessibility team. They acknowledged this is their bug.
On a side note, during our training I love to demonstrate these types of
issues and discuss ways to help them find these issues before they ship
their products. The groups that attend our training love to hear from
us because they truly are devoted to making Microsoft products more
accessible and of course more stable.
Pat, you asked why this bug doesn't effect non-screen reader users.
Unfortunately we see many cases where a screen reader brings out
application bugs that sighted people don't have to worry about. For
example a sighted person doesn't have to deal with MSAA (this is an
accessibility API that an application chooses to use to expose itself to
assistive technology). So if you aren't running assistive technology
(like a screen reader) then you aren't exercising the application's code
dealing with MSAA. If the MSAA code has ugly bugs then the assistive
technology will crash the application but sighted users would never
notice this.
In the case of Windows Explorer, this is exactly the case. Only instead
of MSAA it is UIA. The suggestion from Microsoft is to simply ignore
the fact that that particular search control supports UIA. Luckily we
don't need UIA for this control so we can hack around this. So it is my
goal to have this hack in the next release of Window-Eyes.

interesting thing, is that Vernon has Windows Seven on atleast two
computers, and he says he doesn't have any problems with it.

If it's a Windows Seven bug, I wish that Microsoft would fix it.

I've even had Windows Explorer crash when I have been trying to copy
files from my hard drive to a USB device. One night last week, I
couldn't even copy anything. I was scanning my hard drives, I should
say my antivirus program was scanning my hard drives, not me. lol. I
had to cut the folder from my hard drive to the USB MP3 player.
I kept getting an error like this: "Windows Explorer has encountered a
problem and needs to close." But it never lets one send an error
message to Microsoft.
I know that GW Micro is doing everything they can to do their part to
fix this problem.

I would think he means Windows Explorer. I find it crashes every time I
accidentally use the mouse and down arrow to the line where the search
box is. From time to time, I can recover from the crash without
rebooting my system, but far more often, I will need to reboot. My
solution has been to simply make sure the mouse pointer is at the top
right of the screen while in Windows Explorer.
My system is a Dell desktop tower running Windows 7 Home Premium on a
64-bit computer with all updates current and Window-Eyes 7.5.
