Do you have all sound enhancements disabled? I do this each and every time I have done a Windows reinstall, and never once have I lost sound. I am using an Intel HD Audio onboard chip and the drivers are provided by Microsoft.

Hi Guys,
A couple of days ago there was a discussion on this list about WE and
loosing sound. I’ve noticed that when it happens on my system which is
usually after it has been sitting idle for a while. That at least on my
machine the only way to get it back is to restart, not only does WE stop
speaking but the windows sounds stop also. I have updated all my drivers
but it does still happen from time to time. This is not a WE problem.
