I have to put in my nickels worth here. A 64 bit operating system will support more memory and a larger hard drive, but for the average home user, the additional overhead required by the 64 bit system is overkill in my opinion. Manufactures are pushing 64 bit systems just like auto makers come out with new models each year that look a little different than last year's models so they can sell more cars.
What I worry about is the big push to cloud computing with everything moving to cloud storage and thus eliminating the need for a local hard drive. I don't know about the rest of you, but I trust my own hard drive and its backups over the insecure cloud where anyone can get access to my data if they try hard enough! Meanwhile, you're forking out hundreds or even thousands on brand new hardware that's not supported by your 32 bit operating system. How does that make sense? My mom collects commemorative spoons. They're too little to eat with and the handles are all odd shapes and they collect dust like nobody's business. But they're more use than a 32 bit OS on a brand new computer. No computers should be shipping with 32 bit OS now unless specificly requested by the buyer to support legacy hardware. If there were a point it would be the longtail. In other words, if you are spending 800 to a grand and expecting the laptop to last 3 years you want 64 bit. If you are spending 300 and want the laptop to last a year then it may not make any difference. Best, Erik Burggraaf This month in Ebony Promos: Two new gps systems for demo. I would suggest you think about the 64 bit version. A few more bells and whistles and a lot more things are going to go to 64 bit. You can still run your 32 programs on the 64 system.
