Well to tell you the truth IMO, the worse thing Microsux has done in the
recent past was leaving XP behind. I admit that I do like the ability of 64
bit processing, and there are things I like about Win7, but to yet has any
significant changes in the architecture of the other programs I use made it
worth it in all actuality. I primarily use my computer for audio recording
and while the DAW I use has a 64bit version, most of the plug-ins for
effects and such are still 32bit. There are tools to allow those plug-ins
to run, but it tends to make the environment somewhat unstable especially
while running a screen reader, so currently I'm still running the 32bit
version. Unfortunately, news on the Mac front isn't any brighter since the
accessibility of Pro Tools is diminishing with each release, Logic isn't
accessible, otherwise I'd probably switch to Apple. However, with that
said, for the foreseeable future I'm stuck with Windows. I'm currently
running Window 7 64 Ultimate, and for the most part it's stable, and there
are, as I mention earlier, things I do like about it. I've not even thought
of upgrading to Windows8 because of all the horror stories I've heard. I'm
about to get a new main computer for recording and it will probably come
with Windows 8, and the first thing I plan on doing is installing Windows7
on it. I'm lucky that I work for myself, and can determine what software
I pick and choose to run, and since it's all about workflow to me, I'll
stick with what I know for the time being since I don't have the desire or
time to trouble shoot a lot of issue caused by a new OS interface that may
or may not be better.

I agree about using Windows 7 if and when you upgrade. I hope to be able to
do that at work and know we will stay with Windows 7 at home for the
foreseeable future.

My parents, who are sighted, have had nothing but trouble with Windows 8 and
I would classify them as high beginners to low intermediate in terms of
skill on the computer.

The above tells me that it's not just our community that has had difficulty
with Windows 8, but that the feeling is mutual across the user community.
My husband has said that Microsoft usually comes out with a good version
about every other release and the pattern is being true to form here as XP
was a good release, VISTA not good, Windows 7 good and Windows 8 not good.
Wittness the fact that Microsoft has had to come out with Windows 8.1 to
address major issues with Windows 8.

Thanks.

for those using xp until such time as gw says support will end on this date
I would not worry. your computer will wtill work. Yes true you won't get
updates. However if it's not broke don't fix it. if your going to upgrade
use windows 7 in my opinion.
