Kelly, While I would add my voice to those who are saying to be careful and doing your research, I had an HP laptop that had become almost completely useless. I tried a number of things but with no results. I had experienced a number of issues over time with some of the HP software, so I finally went into MSConfig and stopped the loading of all the HP support software and such. Doing this probably does mean that I may not get some updates, but I'm not sure I was getting the updates anyway because I had so many accessibility issues. Also, I can get some updates from their web site. Anyway, after I did that, it felt like I had a new laptop. I could not believe the difference. It actually caused me not to go out and buy a new laptop. It has been close to a year since I did that and the improvement has remained.
On the other hand, I had a netbook with which I was not very happy. I tried to disable things at startup that I didn't think I needed to get it to run better. To make a long story short, I disabled something thinking it probably had to do with using a docking station I didn't have. Well, it turned out that it assisted with handling of USB connections and I had nothing but crashes until I enabled it again. So, I have been one out of two in this effort.
