Putting, say, the Android OS on one of these devices would be difficult, but not impossible. Android runs on top of what is known as a virtual machine, the Dalvek Machine actually. Essentially, the end user does stuff, like typing. The virtual machine picks this up and sends the proper signals to Android. For example, to get Android onto a BSP, you need to modify the VM to know how to read in and write out braille (which means a braille keyboard driver and very low-level access to the integrated braille display), you need to provide drivers for all onboard components (card readers, ports, bluetooth, wifi, sound card, lcd display, and so on). Then you need to add functionality into your version of Android so that Android knows exactly what to tell the VM to do. To print a word to the braille display, for example, Android would have to make the proper call to the VM, which would have to know how to talk to the display to print out the word.
In short, it is possible, but not very likely as it would be much more work than upgrading Windows CE, which is plenty tricky enough. :) Sorry to go on about Android, but I took a class last semester on Android programming and so I know more about it than any of the other mobile operating systems mentioned, plus Android is open-source so, technically, anyone can modify it to work on any device. It is just very hard to do, and the advantages over Windows for the BSP are not apparent at this point. Thanks.
