Not a big issue calling a tire 23C or 25C and so on but the number ( 19 , 20 ,
22 ,23 , 25 ,28 ,32 etc.) represents how wide the tire is in millimeters. The
French measure their rims with a number and letter ie, 700A , 700B , 700C ,
700D , 650A , 650B ,650C and several other sized. 700A being the most narrow
rim and D being the widest. It makes more sense to me to describe the tire
width in millimeters since that is how they are measured. Through the years
some of these rims have disappeared or discontinued. I do not know of any
current manufactures of 700A or 700D. 700C is the modern day rim almost all of
us ride (even if the Vittoria tire may say 28 in.). 700B is still used in
Europe for some casual rider bike type. 650C for Tri bikes and 650B for some
vintage touring bikes , tandems and early mtn.bikes wheels.

Other opinions may vary. :-)

I guess my point was that you don't have to have a "mountain bike" to ride in
Umstead. Unless I am heading over towards crabtree to some actual trails, I
grab a touring or cross bike for umstead loops.

I am not saying that a slick 25mm road tire would be ideal, but it would be
possible if you wanted a change of scenery sometime. Ideal would probably be a
bike with 30-34mm tires.

Gary, I have always thought 28c equaled 28mm in tire-speak. It wouldn't be the
first time that I've picked up a wrong habit though ;)

Your tires are probably 700x23mm. That means your tire is 23mm wide. Jeff says
that a 25mm or 28mm wide tire will work. A 25/28c (centimeter) tire wold be
pretty wide - about 10 - 11 inches.

Jeff
I’m not quite sure what that means. I just have my trek 5200 OCLV with the
regular road tires which I doubt would work in umstead but if I’m wrong let me
know.

Thanks

You really don't need more than about a 25/28c tire to ride umstead if you stay
off cedar ridge.

if you have the time, a mountain bike, and some wet weather gear
Umstead is the perfect place to ride . . we froze our hands and feet
off but other than that we had a great ride.
