This is really good advice and I've been doing this for years. There are
people I really care about but their feed is mostly reposts so I unollow
and go to their profile regularly.

I also have joined communities and unfollowed (it can take several steps to
stop getting notifications) so that I can control how often I get posts.
Again a lot of groups don't have rules on keeping on topic and facebook
prefers to share reposts from pages rather than profiles as that's how they
make money. Many of those posts are boosted and/or use a totally different
and trending topic to get people to like their page.)

But that means I miss out on a lot due to the lack of a good search and
archiving.

I like forums, and it is now pretty easy to remain logged in to most and
access many via phone. The forums that have survived social media have been
fora that also use social media to share the work of members. And also have
a clean responsive interface and are easy to share images.

This mailing list is probably one of the best balances between social media
and forums. We may not be able to embed images but as has already been seen
we can use links (no need for tags just copy the url)

So I think it might just get more popular over time.
