Poor Mel... He's sobbing all the way to the bank.

Please don't take this the wrong way... but...If you don't like his stuff
there is an option not to go. People have different criteria of what they
enjoy. (This is why my husband loves "Hellboy" and I prefer "Pride and
Prejudice".) I for one enjoy his (MG) movies. I loved "the Patriot"-- it was
a good story. History, NO. I know that he worked with Colonial
Williamsburgh to make things accurate, but since my period is 100 years
before it, I am not that sure how slavish he was to accuracy. Looked good to
me. I also loved "Braveheart"-- not as history certainly, but as a romance.
"The Passion of the Christ" was unbelievably moving, as was "We were
Soldiers", though I don't think he directed that.

As for the Esquire article: Personally I do not think that he is a 'one
note' movie maker. "Tim" anyone? And the "PotC" vs "Braveheart"-- why? --
because they both die in the end?

Costumes can make or break a movie for me, but there are other things to be
considered... Plot, acting, cinematography etc. That is what makes the
experience so cool! I hated "Elizabeth" because the director had an agenda--
not just because the costumes and the history were all wrong.

Having worked in theatre for many years I know the frustration of bringing a
production to fruition. It is that much worse with movies.
Rant rant... sorry, but people comment and complain who have not been in a
position to do a theatrical/movie production. We all know that working on
re-enactment clothing, or even SCA garb -- one at a time-- is a whole other
thing than doing 7000 costumes at once! :-) Thisng always get a little iffy
in movies-- because the director has a vision--- and he also has to make
something "sell" to the audience...

Best Regards-
Monica Spence
(Catriona MacDuff in the SCA)

There is an article in the current Esquire (with Dave Chappelle on the
cover) about sneaking onto the location sets of "Apocalypto," the Mayan epic
that Gibson is currently shooting. The author makes the point that all of
Gibson's movies are essentially the same.
